Hewitt was born in Waco, Texas to Patricia Mae and Herbert Daniel Hewitt. Her parents were a speech-language pathologist and a medical technician respectively. After the divorce of her parents, Hewitt and her only sibling, Todd Hewitt, were brought up by her mother. Hewitt is an honorary godparent of the Audrey Hepburn Children's Fund.
